Bedford County Humane Society saves puppies from grim fate
EVERETT - More than 30 dogs were about to be put down inside a Louisiana shelter, but two shelters stepped in to save the puppies. One of the shelters was Action for Animals in Latrobe, and the other was the Bedford County Humane Society.
"They were one hour away from being euthanized, simply because there aren't enough homes," said Janet Gates, the Bedford County Humane Society manager.
Gates found out about these pups through an urgent Facebook plea.
Dozens of roaches found inside Johnstown restaurant, forcing its closure, state says
JOHNSTOWN — On Friday afternoon, people looking for lunch in downtown Johnstown passed by the once-popular Szechuan Restaurant and, seeing its shuttered doors and dark "open" sign, kept walking.
Michele Stefanik, a passer-by, said she was surprised to hear the restaurant was shut down.
"It always looked fine and it always seemed OK," she said. "Like, I never thought there would be a problem here with it being shut down."
Federal officials investigating another near-collision at US airport
WASHINGTON (TND) — The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed it is investigating a runway incursion at Boston's Logan International Airport on Monday. It's the fifth near-collision at an airport in the U.S. this year. The incident occurred "when a Learjet 60 began a takeoff roll as a JetBlue Embraer 190 was preparing to land on an intersecting runway. No damage or injuries were reported," the NTSB tweeted Wednesday night. The Federal Aviation Administration said its preliminary review found the pilot of the Learjet took off without clearance.
Park Service retracts decision to take down William Penn statue at Philadelphia historical site
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The National Park Service withdrew a proposal Monday to take down a statue of William Penn at a Philadelphia historical site as part of a renovation that touched off a torrent of criticism over the legacy of the man who founded the province of Pennsylvania.
In a brief statement, Independence National Historical Park said it has withdrawn the proposal it had announced quietly before the weekend about a wider renovation of Welcome Park, located just blocks from the Liberty Bell and the National Constitution Center.
Steelers rookie Kenny Pickett officially listed as QB1
UPDATE |Pittsburgh (WJAC) — Pittsburgh Steelers first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett has officially been promoted to the team's starting quarterback job.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport first alluded to the promotion Monday, Tweeting that the Steelers were expected to elevate Pickett to the role.
According to the team's updated depth chart, Pickett is now listed as QB1.
Pickett's first start is now scheduled for Sunday as Pittsburgh (1-3) travels to Buffalo to take on the Bills.
Veteran forward Jeff Carter retires after 19 NHL seasons
Veteran NHL forward Jeff Carter has retired from professional hockey after 19 seasons.

Cresson Lake Playhouse, PennCrest Bank hosts music festival
LORETTO, Pa. (WJAC) — The first annual PennCrest Bank Music Festival was held Saturday evening at the Cresson Lake Playhouse.
The weather didn't rain on their parade.
They used their indoor and outdoor venues for visitors to listen to professional musicians throughout the evening.
Organizers say they hope to make this summer fundraiser an annual event.
Artistic Director Paul Seymour said the pandemic cancelled their last two seasons.

Famous Rathskeller, Spats Cafe holding 1 last call

The State College staple will be locking its doors for good and customers have been there since they opened Saturday morning.
The night is still young, but fans have been coming and going at the Rathskeller.

Jessica Vamos, the executive director at the Humane Society of Cambria County brought a senior dog named Shy to the studio. Shy is very loving and loves to wag her tail. She is a boxer mix, up to date on vaccinations and spayed. She really needs to find a loving home for the winter.
Live bed bugs intentionally released in Pa. Walmart, state police say
EDINBORO, Pa. (NBC) — People in Pennsylvania are bugging out after police say someone released bed bugs inside a men's dressing room at a Walmart.
It happened Thursday in Edinboro, Erie County.
Police say a manager at the store found a closed pill bottle with live bugs crawling inside.
The next day, Ecolab was contacted and found bed bugs crawling inside the men's dressing room.
Another closed pill bottle that contained several dead bugs was also found on the floor of the men's department near the belts.
